GNCC Rnd 1, Florida

Race Report: GNCC Rnd 1, Florida
Rider: Paul Whibley
Team: Am-Pro Yamaha
Bike: Yamaha WR 450
Result: 10th XC1

Waking up to rain Sunday morning had the sand primed for riding. It all cleared up by the start of the race so things were looking good. With the wave of the green flag the 2010 GNCC series was under way. My WR fired up quickly and I took the opening holeshot. Jimmy Jarrett snuck by me a couple corners later but I was happy to have someone lead the way for a bit. I was comfortable in 2nd until some mudholes rearranged the order a little. I dropped back to 4th I think but was still in touch with the leaders. On the second lap Charlie Mullins made a break for it and begain to open up a lead. A branch had caught my rolloffs and damaged the canister. With a trail of film flying behind me and increasingly distorted vision from the sand and a couple of mudholes I lost touch with the front bunch.
End of lap two we were in for gas (as most riders did) as we elected not to push the gas mileage in the thick sand. With a freah pair of Smiths restoring my vision I managed to catch back up to Josh Strang who was running in 3rd. Part way into that lap my vent hose for the tank came loose and begain splashing gas everywere. I came into pit again at the end of the 3rd lap to refuel and for a quick repair. I had lost some time and dropped well back. I pushed hard and regained some positions but had to pit again at the end of the 4th lap to make sure I had enough gas to finish the last to laps of the race. After working my way up to 4th I ran out of gas just under a mile from the finish. I ran out to the pits and borrowed some gas from the some guys who were pitting track side. By the time I made it to the finish I was down to 10th XC1 and 15th overall.
Very disappointing start to the year and one that leaves me with a lot of work to do.

Results:
1st: Josh Strang
2nd: Chris Bach
3rd: Charlie Mullins

                                      Thanks Gordy.
These next two months will fly by as we have big races every weekend. Soon will be time for me to be lining up on your new EX track. Getting nervous about that and have done a couple laps of Randys EX track in preparation.
                                      See you all soon.

Shit, Katerine. I see you got the no. 1 plate already on your bike. The bush riders need to keep practing before you get home.

                                      Hi "Other Paul"
We had a great time in MN. The track was great, I was having a lot of fun and was pretty disappointed when my day ended early. One of my favorite tracks this year!
Will have to come back sometime and try win it.
We have to thank the Debel family for letting us stay and showing us around.

Paul, what did you think of the Hill City race. No B/S, straight up comments. It was great to see you their and would love to see you come back, minus the chain guide breaking. Matt Stavish had the same thing happen to him. Look forward to hearing your comments good or bad.

Im still working on finding that perfect mapping. I have tried smoother maps but I also keep coming back to the std map for the power it produces. I have used the G2 throttle cams to mellow it out. Also Im now testing the Q4 FMF silencer. This takes that initial surge away. Now I may be able to go back to a more aggressive throttle cam and mapping. With more testing I hope to have a better idea. I will let you know what I come up with.

Paul, good on ya' and your Yammy..I also have a 2010 450f, and am curious if you would share MAP settings you typically might use for different types of terrain. I find the stock mapping a bit abrupt for off road, tight terrain, but stock seems to work well for motocross. I can adjust timing/fuel mixture to take the 'surge" off initial throttle, but it also takes the 'snap" away that I like to use to steer with the rear wheel...any thoughts..? Wuld like to hearr recommendations...
